Memo From Frank & Dave

Lower gasoline prices make for a great Thanksgiving. The drastic reduction in price at the pump will certainly create a ton more RV traffic on the road, and that means significantly higher occupancy and revenue at RV parks. We’re not sure what lead to this unsuspected industry boon, but the culprit definitely deserves an extra helping of turkey on November 27th. And we’d just like to say thanks also to our extended RV park family that reads this newsletter. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Why Good Managers Are Essential To Success With An RV Park

Here’s a photo I shot recently inside a Romano’s Macaroni Grill restaurant, while I was traveling. This photo was taken at 6 PM on a Friday. Yes, there is nobody in the restaurant but me. What’s going on here?

Worst service I’ve ever seen

Despite the fact that I was the only one in the restaurant, it took maybe ten minutes for the waiter to bring me a water and get my order. I saw the waiters standing in a group telling stories (probably about which restaurant they were trying to get a job with). Even after I ordered, it too forever to get the food and the waiter never came back by to re-fill my water.

Even after I ordered, it too forever to get the food and the waiter never came back by to re-fill my water.

Worst food I’ve ever had

When the food did come out, it was atrocious. Who can screw up spaghetti and meatballs? I would have preferred a frozen dinner to this awful stuff on my plate. Maybe the kitchen staff already resigned and the waiter made it himself, I don’t know.

Filthiest bathroom I’ve ever seen

When I went in the bathroom, I almost threw up. It must have not been cleaned in a week. I can’t even tell you the sights and smells in there, but I know the health department would not have been too happy.

Nobody even attempted to solve the situation

Despite everything wrong with this restaurant – bad service, bad food and filthy conditions – the manager was not raising a finger to fix it. That’s why the restaurant was empty – everybody in town already knew what was going on. Yet you would think the manager would have been worried about the fact that they had to revenue and try to fix the business model. But apparently not.

Conclusion

I’ve told you this story because it illustrates the important of a manager to the success of any business. If you do not hire good people and manage them effectively, your RV park can end up like this restaurant, and have zero revenue to boot. The most important component to any RV park is an effective, successful manager. A manager can either make your RV park mint money, or go straight into the poor house. It’s up to you, as the owner, to make sure that you get the management function right.

RV Models On Ebay Sometimes Cost As Much As The Real Thing

Here’s a Matchbox toy RV that costs around $922. No that’s not a misprint. Apparently, the RV model is extremely rare and that’s the going rate. Of course, you can buy an actual travel trailer less money in some instances. This is the first case I’ve ever seen where you can buy the real thing for less than the toy. Now, a $922 travel trailer is not going to be in great condition, but it’s certainly bigger than a Matchbox and sleeps more people.

Why RV’s Offer A “Feel Good” Moment

Why is it that the sight of an RV makes the average American feel good? I think it’s the relationship between the RV and happy memories of the past. Who does not have a favorite story of adventure in their RV, or the best food ever cooked on a grill? Who can’t remember that spirited volleyball match, or the time that Uncle Roy lit his hot dog on fire? Clearly, the RV has become a national symbol of fun. And now you can look at one every time you go inside your house, apparently.
